Pig fat in food

SMC BANS SALE OF KISSAN JAM, MAGGI, CADBURY CHOCOLATE

M HYDERI

Srinagar, Dec 20: Authorities have banned the sale of some popular brands like Kissan jam, Maggi noodles and Cadbury chocolates fearing that the foodstuff could be containing pig fat. The general public has been asked to refrain from the consumption of these multinational products till the reports of their analysis are out.
“The public in general and Muslims in particular are cautioned through this notice, against consuming Kissan jam, Maggi noodles and Cadbury chocolates till reports come from the Public Analyst,” says health officer, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Dr Reyaz Ahmed in a public notification vide order No. SMC/PHD/1176/78.
Officials say the SMC notification came in response to reports that the porcine products are used in the edibles. “It has been mentioned in the press report that porcine products are used in jams, ketchups, chocolates and other foodstuff manufactured by Indian editions of multinational companies,” adds Dr Reyaz in the notice.
“Further, it has been reported that multinational companies devised the “E-Code” in a bid to camouflage the presence of Haraam (forbidden for Muslims) substance after listing of ingredients in canned/packaged foods was made mandatory under law. Instead of writing it down in simple language for laymen, the multinational companies use numbers to denote the presence of Haraam ingredients in foodstuff,” the SMC notice adds.
The Corporation officials say the samples of the fishy products have been collected from Srinagar markets and sent for analysis to the laboratory of Public Analyst, the reports of which would take around a month to come.
Meanwhile, the SMC had directed the shopkeepers to stop the sale of such products forthwith.
“All the distributors dealing with such foodstuff of multinational companies are hereby directed to stop the sale of these foodstuff.”
