GOUSIA HOSPITAL PERFORMS RARE SURGERY

Surgeons remove gallbladder, appendicitis through buttonhole procedure

SAMAAN LATEEF

Srinagar, Dec 18: The doctors at Gousia Hospital Khanyar in Shahr-e-Khaas, on Friday claimed to have achieved a milestone by conducting a successful surgery by removing gallbladder and appendicitis of a female patient through buttonhole procedure.
“We are reporting first case in the state where a gallbladder full of stones and a diseased appendicitis were removed through a single belly button surgery at the same time,” Dr Rafiq Simnani, Laparoscopic Surgeon Specialist at the hospital, told reporters.
Giving details, Dr Simnani said: “The procedure was done with a single incision around the umbilicus and therefore had only a scar.”
The doctor said the patient Fahmeeda wife of Ghulam Muhammad of Khag Beeru had gallstones and appendicitis, which were removed in one go. “Through single incision, doctors removed my gallbladder and also appendicitis,” she said.
Fahmeeda who has undergone some surgeries in the past, said “only this one was painless and easy to bear with”.
Dr Simnani claimed they were doing the surgeries for past two months and were pioneers of Buttonhole Laparoscopic surgery in India.
He added: “Since the incision is made around the umbilicus, the scar will not be noticeable. Moreover, the cost too will be same as that of conventional laparoscopic surgery, which requires three or four small incisions thereby resulting in the same number of scars.”
He said the single incision surgery was performed on three patients at the hospital in the last 15 days.
“Yielding the same results as open surgeries,” the medicos said, “the benefit of minimally invasive surgery for patients is in the recovery time.”
“Since laparoscopic surgery involves tiny incisions, there is less blood transfusion, less pain and patients are able to heal quicker.”
He described the procedures as “modern surgical techniques.”
He explained that there were significant advantages to patients for this type of surgery as compared to open surgical procedures.
“Even though the procedures may be longer, hospital stays are less and patients are often discharged the same day. There is also less exposure to internal organs,” he added.
