Mirwaiz for international probe in Shopian
Seeks ‘concrete steps on ground’ before dialogue
DANISH NABI
Srinagar, Dec 18: Vehemently rejecting the Central Bureau of Investigation report in Shopian twin rape and murder case, the Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Friday termed it another deception aimed at serving the ‘so-called national interest of India.’ He said any statement on dialogue from New Delhi would not be taken seriously by the conglomerate until substantiating steps are taken on ground.
Mirwaiz was reacting to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s remarks about CBI report and dialogue process. The minister had termed the rejection of CBI report bizarre.
“We reject the report because over the years Kashmiris have only met deception in the name of probes by the government agencies into any untoward incident. Be it massacre in Hawal, Gawkadal or Chattisinghpora. We know these agencies work for the so called national interest of India and they never look for the truth,” Mirwaiz told a gathering at Jamia Masjid here.
Questioning the report, he said the government should have no hesitations in letting an international organization probe the incident and dig out the truth.
“Let United Nations, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch or any other international agency probe the incident if CBI probe is fair. Why should government have objection?” he asked.
Umar said CBI report wouldn’t be accepted by anyone in Kashmir as it neglected the facts put before it by Majlis-e-Mashawrat. He announced complete support to Majlis in whatever decisions it takes in consultation with the conglomerate.
“We will fight until truth is revealed,” he said.
On Chidambaram’s statement that he was confident over quiet dialogue, Mirwaiz said any such statement could not be taken seriously unless New Delhi takes concrete measures on ground to make atmosphere conducive for the talks. “These statements will only be mere statements until India accepts our five-point formula which can create the atmosphere for India, Pakistan and Kashmir to work for a meaningful dialogue,” he said.
Mirwaiz also criticized Union Defence Minister, A K Antony, for claiming a reduction of 30,000 troops in Kashmir. “It has just happened on paper. If it is a reality then did anyone see it? Where did it happen? When did it happen?” he questioned.
He, however, demanded reduction of “considerable number” of troops for India to show its sincerity in dialogue.
