14 injured in Sopur clashes

GHULAM MUHAMMAD

Sopur, Dec 19: At least 14 persons were injured when police and paramilitary CRPF used force to quell demonstrators in this north Kashmir town on Saturday.
Hundreds of people took the streets this morning to protest the alleged highhandedness of the CRPF troopers who had gone “berserk” on Friday after a grenade explosion, in which five persons including four CRPF men were injured.
“As soon as the protesters reached near the main Chowk, police and CRPF men deployed there resorted to baton charge and fired numerous tear smoke canisters to disperse them,” witnesses told Greater Kashmir.
In the police action, they said, at least 14 persons sustained injuries.
“A teargas shell hit a youth on his chest. He was rushed to Srinagar for specialized treatment,” they added.
