Asking questions

Questions are an important part of learning process. But most academic institutions do not allow and encourage debates and discussions in the classrooms. Generally in our institutions, the process of learning is unilateral. Teachers teach and students listen. The prescribed syllabus is vast and varied that the teachers mostly remain busy in completing it. And they hardly find time for debates and discussions. Sometimes even the teachers feel irritated. This is understandable considering our marks-oriented system of rote learning which leaves very little scope for enquiry. Where there is no openness and questioning of authority, children prefer to stay silent and the doubts remain. We should not at the same time ask uncomfortable questions as this affects the academic atmosphere and fails to produce the requisite results.  Students who do not question become passive citizens. When a student is encouraged to ask questions, he would certainly question the way society functions. Learning with understanding means more original thinkers and innovations. America is an example of an innovation society. We should not be just followers, but the leaders too. Even in families, we should encourage our children to ask questions. We should inculcate in our children the habit of debates and discussions. This can enhance in them the skill of communication and the spirit of enquiry.
