Bus stand, Lolab stream turn into garbage dump

SHAHID RAFIQ

Kupwara, Dec 24: The Lolab stream flowing through the town here has been turned into a garbage dumping site allegedly by the Kupwara Municipal Committee.
The employees of the Committee collect garbage from interior localities of the town like Rigipora, Sulkoot, Mir Mohalla and Malik Mohalla and dispose off it near bus stand Kupwara and in the stream.
Locals say the dumping sites had become health hazards.
“We are unable to open windows of our houses due to stinking smell. The Committee continues to dump the garbage despite assurances of dumping it at other sites,” they said.
The butchers in the area also slaughter animals on the stream and dump animal wastes into it near the Jamia Masjid area.
Locals said the waste attracts dogs and other birds, which had become a threat for the people, especially students of different educational institutions.
Repeated attempts to contact Chairman Municipal Committee proved unsuccessful.
