SMC to celebrate SK Week
SHEIKH’S BIRTH ANNIVERSARY
GK CITY CORRESPONDENT
Srinagar, Dec 4: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation seems to have spared most of its achievements of 2009 to commemorate the birth anniversary of National Conference founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah through weeklong celebrations: The Sher-e-Kashmir Birth Anniversary Week.
From the laying of foundation stone for rupees multi-crore colony at Samarbug to rehabilitee Jhelum dwellers, to the inauguration of community halls in the City and eco-friendly drives, the SMC plans to unveil a lot from December 5.
The SMC’s Sher-e-Kashmir Birth Anniversary Week comes in line with the NC-led government’s plans to celebrate Sheikh’s birth anniversary in the big way.
While the state government is scheduled to announce “landmark employment policy” on the day, the civic body doesn’t look to stay behind in the celebrations.
“We have lot to dedicate to the people and this all will start with the foundation stone laying at Samarbug by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah,” said City Mayor Salman Ali Sagar.
He said community halls and other public facilities would be inaugurated during the weeklong celebrations.
“Besides, we have many think green and eco-friendly plans,” Sagar told Greater Kashmir.
But why these developments kept on hold for Sheikh’s birth anniversary? Is it party politics? “No,” replies Sagar junior who hails from the National Conference.
“See facilities like community halls and public loos were under construction and most of them got completed close to this Big Day. And, as we couldn’t get everything inaugurated in a day, we planned to stretch it to week.”
“Moreover, what better could be the time to dedicate the facilities to the people than Sher-e-Kashmir’s day, the man who put the people on the path of prosperity,” Sagar added.
“We are giving something big to the people so let this new chapter in the history also be linked to Sheikh Sahib,” he added.
Meanwhile, the SMC has kick-started media campaign about the weeklong celebrations.
