Srinagar, Dec 4: Attack on senior Hurriyat Conference (M) leader Fazal Haq Qureshi has evoked strong condemnations from various parties.
The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, termed it as an attack on the ongoing freedom movement and the Hurriyat Conference. “It is really sad that people are attacked while going for Namaz. Fazal Haq’s contribution to the freedom movement is immense and attack on him is the attack on the entire movement.”
He termed the attack as a cowardly act. “Some people don’t want Kashmir issue to be resolved as it will close their shops which they are running due to conflict. Such agencies want status-quo to be maintained in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Asked whether the attack would have repercussions on the dialogue process, he said: “The attack has occurred at a time when the dialogue process hasn’t even started. But we will continue our sincere efforts aimed at resolving the Kashmir issue. We are committed to resolve this long pending dispute through peaceful means.”
The veteran pro-freedom leader and Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Shah Geelani, termed the attack as “inhuman” and “un-Islamic” irrespective of who carried it out. “It is an unfortunate incident which needs to be condemned strongly. It is an un-Islamic act no matter who is involved in it.”
The pro-freedom leader said such incidents hamper the ongoing movement. “And agencies have always used this card to sabotage the struggle.”
Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Muhammad Yasin Malik, said it was a brutal act, “And we strongly condemn it.”
Malik however refused to comment on what impact the attack would have on the dialogue process or the movement, saying, “It is attack on a human soul and we need not to link it with dialogue process at this point of time.”
Chairman of Mahaz-e-Azadi and veteran pro-freedom leader, Azam Inqalabi termed attack as a “dastardly act” aimed at creating differences within the pro-freedom camp.
He said that Qureshi is his close associate and both of them have spent lot of time in Jail together.
While condemning the incident the Peoples league Spokesman, Farooq Ahmad, said: ‘If any militant organization has done it then it is very unfortunate on their part. Dialogue is a political process which shall be allowed to happen without any hindrances.”
The spokesman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Ayaz Akbar, termed attack as unfortunate. “And we condemn it strongly.”
Condemnations poured in from other pro-freedom parties also including Jamiat-e-Islamia, National People’s Party, United People’s Front and Republican Peoples Movement.
Senior CPI (M) leader M Y Tarigami said attack had been carried out by frustrated people who did not want Kashmiris to live in peace.
