Assess loss to orchardists
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Srinagar, Nov 10: J&K Unit of CPI(M) today asked the state government to take up necessary measures to assess the losses suffered by the orchardists due to early snowfall. "The Government should take up measures for assessment of the losses on urgent basis, especially in the Kandi belt of South Kashmir where sizeable population of fruit growers has been worst hit by the snowfall," state secretary of CPI(M) Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said in a statement here. Demanding immediate relief to the peasants (orchardists) whose fruit plantation has been damaged due to the snowfall, Tarigami said the present dispensation should set a new precedent of extending prompt succour to the farming community, who suffer in such natural calamities. Tarigami said although heavy downpour and snowfall has ended long dry spell thereby providing relief to the people at large, yet its untimely occurrence has damaged orchards at several places as harvesting season was still going on. The CPI(M) leader said the peasants have suffered as their pruning season was yet to take off, adding the snowfall has extensively damaged green branches and foliage of the fruit trees, affecting their fruit bearing capacity considerably.
