CAPD raids on bakeries irk traders
GK NEWS NETWORK
Srinagar, Nov 25: The Consumer Affairs and Distribution Department’s recent inspection of the bakery and confectionary shops in the City has drawn flak from the community who termed it “unlawful and harassing.”
The All Kashmir Bakers and Confectionary Association President, Bashir Ahmed Sofi, threatened to move Court should the CAPD continue with its “unwarranted inspections.”
Sofi claimed the CAPD had no role in the business because “it doesn’t fall in the essential commodity list.” “Bakery is a luxury item,” he added.
He said the CAPD had inspected several bakery shops in the summer capital areas ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha only to “unleash a reign of terror” and impose “unwarranted fine.”
“They (CAPD officials) escorted by cops literally forced their entry into our shops and asked irrelevant questions and finally end up slapping fine on the innocent bakers,” Sofi said.
“Even though we keep everything including rate-list in place, we are being unnecessarily victimized.”
He said the CAPD during a raid at Nawa Kadal Monday had asked the shopkeeper show the ledgers.
“How could they ask for it when they have no role in our business?” Sofi argued.
He said there were other departments like Metrology and Srinagar Municipal Corporation to look after the weights and measure and the public health issues respectively.
“Let the CAPD mind its own business,” the president added.
He said in European countries the baker community was highest respect and nominated for the representation in the government. “But here we are being victimized, by one way or the other.”
To mention, on Monday the traders at Residency Road had raised similar objections.
When contacted, a spokesman of the CAPD refuted the Association claim that the department had no role in their business. “Why are we called upon to fix rates of the commodities they sell, if we don’t have a role,” he told Greater Kashmir.
