Srinagar, Sept 15: To provide “clean and hygienic environment” in and around Masjids and shrines for upcoming Jumatul Vida, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation on Tuesday deputed special teams. The SMC also put into service facilities like mobile toilets and installed streetlights.
City Mayor Salman Sagar while reviewing the arrangements visited the Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta and held discussions with its Intizaamiya.
Officials said in view of the shortage of public loos near the Masjid, Sagar got mobile toilets stationed there.
“Besides, he directed for the installation of streetlights around the grand Masjid,” they added.
The officials said additional dumper bins would be installed near the Masjid.
“For better management of affairs we are in contact with the Intizamiyaa committees of other Masjids and shrines as well,” said a senior SMC official.
When contacted the Mayor said: “We want to give better facilities to the devotees. So a liaison was must or else their could be confusion which could lead to public inconvenience.”
Sagar said the sanitation officers in various wards of the City have been apprized about the issue.
“We have kept our teams ready for the job,” the Mayor said.
To a question, he said for better sanitation additional stock of limestone has also been kept in place.
Sagar also visited Hazratbal and Makhdoom Sahib(RA) shrines and reviewed the arrangements.
While speaking to the Intizaamiyaa committees, the Mayor requested them to ask devotees not to use polythene for it was detrimental for the environment.
Meanwhile, Sagar appealed the Masjid Imams to preach people to get rid of the polythene menace.
“Masjid Imams always played pivotal role in shaping a society like ours, so I think they can use their position for doing good on eco-friendly front as well,” the Mayor said.
