Srinagar, Sept 8: Army on Tuesday claimed that it had foiled an infiltration bid in frontier district of Kupwara by killing one militant, while a policeman was injured in a grenade explosion in north Kashmir’s Varmul district.
“The militant sneaked into Keran sector this morning but he was confronted by troops near the Line of Control. The militant opened fire which was retaliated triggering an encounter in which he was killed,” an army officer said.
He said that this was the second infiltration bid by the militants within a span of one week. “Last week five militants were killed near LoC in Gurez sector,” he added.
According to the Greater Kashmir reporter for Varmul, Altaf Baba, unknown persons hurled a grenade towards the official residence of the principal district and sessions judge, Muhammad Nazir Fida, in Varmul town this morning the device exploded with a big bang injuring a police constable, Muhammad Iqbal (belt No 396.) He suffered splinter injuries on his forehead. He was rushed to a hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger.
The deputy inspector general of police north Kashmir, A Q Manhas, said that a manhunt had been launched to trace the attackers. Senior civil, police and army officials visited the spot soon after the incident.
