Fisheries deptt clocks Rs 3 cr revenue in ’09-10

Srinagar, Apr 10: The Fisheries Department has marked a sustained increase in the fish production during last five years.
The department has yielded Rs 3.16 crore revenue in 2009-10, the department said in a statement.
“Under the stewardship of minister for Fisheries Aijaz Ahmad Khan the department is on way to achieve the record production of fish both in trout and carp culture this year also,” it said.
“The establishment of fish units at district levels during the past five years has yielded encouraging results and the trout units in all the districts were introduced. Thirty such units have been established till date,” it said.
The production of trout seed in the departmental hatcheries has increased from 21 lakh some years ago to 40 lakh kgs and the new trout schemes launched in the private sector recently will be catered easily,” it said.
“The number of carp units has swelled to 500 which has given an opportunity to youth in rural areas to earn their livelihood.”
“Many such units will be established in near future as the Minister has got many centrally sponsored schemes approved for the state of J&K,” it said.
The schemes are bound to give a boost to the fish production in the State. The department has introduced many welfare schemes to ameliorate the living conditions of the fishermen community and scores of fishermen have been covered under housing scheme and many such fishermen small colonies have come up at different places, it said.
