Militancy threw challenges to JKP: Khoda

Jammu, Apr 12: The Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda today said the militancy made J&K Police to adopt a new wave of challenges adding the police had coped with increased threat posed from across the border.
 Reviewing the police modernization programme at a meeting here, he said to meet challenges, the Police was being provided funds for its modernization by the Centre and State Governments since 2001 and it had been utilizing these resources to the extent of 100 per cent up to 2008 and more than 75 per cent of the funds released for the year thereafter.
 About the scheme, he said the Police focused on up-gradation in at least eight components, including housing, procurement of armored vehicles and bunkers for anti-militancy operations. Major emphasis was on utilization of funds for procuring latest weapons and communication system for operational groups.
 He said during past 5 years, the Police was utilizing approximately Rs 100 cr per year in upgrading its facilities. This was necessitated due to the expansion of the force which has increased from 57,734 in 2000 to 82,418 in 2010. He said under this scheme, in the housing sector, 88 police station buildings, 43 police post buildings, 150 barracks and 1911 quarters had been constructed.
