Use of nuclear weapons is haram: Ayatollah Khamenei
Tehran, Apr 18: Terming the US as the only 'atomic criminal' in the world, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said the use of weapons of mass destruction is 'haram' and a violation of human rights.
Addressing a nuclear disarmament conference in Tehran, Khamenei described atomic weapons as a serious threat to humanity, and said it was incumbent on everyone to safeguard humanity from such weapons.
He said Iran regards utilising nuclear weapons as 'haram' or forbidden in Islam.
The leader said any use of nuclear weapons, and even any threat to use such weapons, is a serious violation of human rights and a war crime, the paper said.
The nuclear disarmament conference currently underway in Tehran, is being held at a time when the US is pressing and mobilising other nations to impose fresh speedy sanctions on Iran to quell its atomic ambitions.
Khamenei said the US, being the only country to have used a nuclear bomb against a foe, was the only atomic criminal in the world.
"The only atomic criminal in the world is falsely claiming to be campaigning against the proliferation of nuclear weapons, while it has definitely made no serious effort toward this end," Khamenei said.
