Govt weighing civic polls schedule options
GK NEWS NETWORK
Jammu, Apr 1: The government is looking into the options to delay the scheduled civic polls and, after consultation with Chief Electoral Officer the matter would be taken up in the cabinet meeting convened by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday.
Official sources said the upcoming elections for Municipal Corporations and Committees and Panchayats came up for discussion in the meeting held by the chief minister with some ministers, here today.
They said that the meeting deliberated upon the demand emerging from Kashmir region to postpone the elections at least till July, for ensuring an incident free ‘summer’ in the region.
The meeting was informed that the Chief Electoral Officer had issued notification for `electoral rolls’ and the process was likely to be completed by mid April followed by the Municipality elections in May.
“It was suggested that both the elections be conducted at the same time so as to save the time as well as the expenditure to be incurred on the elections”, sources told Greater Kashmir, adding, “However, some of the members were of the opinion that the elections be conducted as per schedule”.
The meeting failed to evolve any consensus over the matter and it was decided that the government should take the opinion of Chief Electoral Officer before putting up the issue before the state cabinet, which is schedule to meet on Monday.
