Airtel undersea project gets nod

New Delhi, Apr 20: Telecom major Bharti Airtel's ambitious proposal to lay a 12,091 km long undersea optical fibre cable via eight countries from Marseilles in France to Juhu Beach in Mumbai has received a nod from a Central panel.
The proposal involves laying of a fibre-optic cable from Marseilles in France via Catania in Italy, Tripoli in Lebanon, Alexandria and Suez in Egypt, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Fujairah in United Arab Emirates and Karachi in Pakistan to Juhu Beach in Mumbai.
Sources in the Environment Ministry said the Expert Appraisal Committee for Building Construction, Coastal Regulation Zone, Infrastructure Development and Miscellaneous projects gave the Coastal Regulation Zone clearance to the proposal in a recent meeting.
As per project proponent, the cable network linking will be complemented with nine terminal stations forming a consortium of nine leading telecom carriers from eight countries.
