Srinagar, Apr 20: Vice-Chancellor Kashmir University, Prof Riyaz Punjabi, Tuesday underlined the need for promoting world peace while terming peace as an all encompassing concept.
“It is quite sad that we are today living in an age of wars and conflicts but there is hope as a parallel movement for peace is run by peace loving people across the globe. Absence of war does not necessarily mean that there is peace,” the VC said at the start of 3-day workshop on “Negotiating World Peace” in Kashmir University here.
VC said peace should begin from the family which he termed as the first unit of the any social system. “Let us learn to have introspection of ourselves and strive for peace within ourselves, our family and then expand it to outside our home,” he said. Asserting that we must be able to negotiate our differences successfully VC said that despite differences we need to understand that there are joint areas of concern where all of us should work together. “If we are at peace with ourselves, then alone can we go ahead to work for world peace,” said the VC to an audience comprising of students, academics, members of civil society and scores of NSS volunteers from both the valley and outside.
The workshop is being organized by the Nation Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of the University jointly with the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Tamil Nadu. Noted academicians, media persons and scholars will present their papers during the three days of the workshop.
In his address, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. A R Yousuf said that in a time when the world is termed as a global village, 'it is our duty to strive towards making this world a better place to live'.
