On Earth Day, KU to join a billion people

Srinagar, Apr 21:  To commemorate the Earth Day, the Kashmir University is joining one billion people across 200 countries world over to show their concern about the deteriorating conditions of the nature, the KU PRO Wednesday said.
 The university is organizing events that will feature a variety of activities like “interactive exhibits of research work on Earth Sciences, debates and Campus cleaning.”
 The KU VC, Prof Riyaz Punjabi said: “By organizing various activities on the Day, the aim is to inculcate within us a deeper appreciation for all that nature has given us.”
 He said that combating the land and water resources degradation and climate change was a priority area of research at KU.
 “Through the combined efforts of the academia, government and the civil society, we are trying to use our scientific knowledge and multi-disciplinary expertise to understand and characterize the problems related to the earth system.”
 Dr Shakil A Romshoo, Organizing Secretary of the Earth Day celebrations at KU said the reckless exploitation of land and water resources in the region was putting tremendous strain on the sustainability of earth resources.
