3 die in city mishaps

Srinagar, Apr 24: Three persons including an elderly lady and a doctor were killed while two children critically injured in separate road mishaps across the Srinagar city in the past 24 hours.
Eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir that a speedy Honda City hit Khati Begum wife of Ghulam Rasool Sheikh of Mandir Bagh, Baghat Barzalla and her two grandchildren around 7 pm near Parraypopra, Baghat.
They were rushed to SMHS hospital where the doctors declared Khati Begum brought dead. The children, of the age of three to four, were hospitalised in critical condition “The vehicle, coming from Hyderpora side, was moving on a very high speed,” an eyewitness told Greater Kashmir.
He said Khati along with her grandchildren were crossing the road when the vehicle hit them. “The driver of the vehicle must have seen them crossing the road from distance as there was no curve on the road. However, it (vehicle) kept approaching them at a fast speed and hit them,” he said.
Locals said the accused driver, of a young age, flew-off from the spot along with his vehicle.
The Station House Officer, Sadder Police Station, Tejnder Singh told Greater Kashmir that the police had launched a manhunt to nab the culprit. From the preliminary investigations it has been found that the vehicle was Honda City driven at a fast speed by the driver. The incident evoked strong public fury against the authorities for failing to curb the menace of fast driving despite repeated promises to address the concern.
Pertinently the residents of the area have several times complained against rash driving, particularly by school goers.
A boy identified as Sakib was killed when a truck going on at a high speed hit him near Khumaini Chowk, Bemina. Sources said following the incident people from nearby area rushed to the spot and seized the vehicle.
SHO Parmipora said they were trying to pacify the angry protestors.
A doctor Ajaz Ahmad was killed when hit by a vehicle near HMT on Srinagar-Varmul highway late last evening. Eyewitnesses said that a speedy maruti JKO9-5404 overran him after he was coming home from offering the Isha prayers.
Locals rushed to the spot and shifted the doctor to SKIMS Soura where he succumbed to his injuries after few hours.
