Rise against the system: Qayoom urges lawyers
KHALID GUL
Islamabad, Apr 28: Appealing the lawyer fraternity of the valley to rise against the system, President High Court Bar Association, Mian Abdul Qayoom, Wednesday said that a program will soon be announced to help the Kashmiris convicted in Lajpat Nagar blasts.
“We all know that the Indian judiciary system sets double standards when it comes to Kashmiris but then we can’t be mute spectators. The intellectuals particularly the lawyers have to rise against the system, fight against all odds and revolt,” said Mian Qayoom while addressing lawyers in Islamabad Bar.
He said that the Bar will soon come up with a program wherein they will try to devise a mechanism to fight against implicating innocent Kashmiris in the false cases including those convicted in Lajpat Nagar blasts recently.
Alleging that the accused in the Lajpat Nagar blasts were never given a fair trial, Qayoom said, “Even after 8 years of trial the judgment was reserved and to pro-long it further the lawyers were again made to argue the case as the previous judge got transferred.”
Qayoom alleged that even the trial was bifurcated and while the judgment of the Kashmiris was withheld, for others it was given much earlier.
Emphasizing upon the lawyers fraternity to raise their voice against the ‘draconian’ Public Safety Act and other laws, Qayoom said, “ How can a person be kept in detention without trial?”
“But here even a police constable dishonors the order passed by the judge. A seventh detention order has been passed against Shabir Ahmad Shah while 8th has been passed against Masrat Alam Bhat. Similarly 4th detention order has also been passed against Ghulam Nabi Sumji , Muhammad Yousuf Mir and Hafizullah Mir. Innocent people are been booked while killers are enjoying security and some of them are even sitting in the legislature,” alleged Qayoom.
Qayoom said that even under the Indian Constitution there is a provision of speedy trial and it is clearly mentioned that if you detain a person he has to be kept near his house but here innocent Kashmiris are languishing in Kotbalwal and Tihar jails and subjected to inhuman torture.
Among others who were present on the occasion included High Court Bar Association vice-president and Islamabad Bar Association President, Fayaz Ahmad Saudagar. Earlier, Mian Qayoom addressed lawyers in Kulgam Bar also.
