City transport policy in offing: Govt

Jammu, Apr 29: To streamline traffic in Srinagar and Jammu cities, the government is introducing a comprehensive city transport policy very soon.
 This was stated by Transport and CAPD Minister, Qamar Ali Akhoon, while reviewing the road safety measures and prices of essential commodities at a meeting here last evening.
 He asked the officers to create awareness among masses about their rights and traffic rules by holding programmes in educational institutions. He said eight Consumer Courts were being established at district level, adding orders to this effect were being issued within days.
 He asked the Director, CAPD Jammu to convene a meeting of wholesale and retail dealers and sort out the measures for fixing of equitable rates of commodities. He asked the market checking squads to curb the black marketing and profiteering. 
 He asked the traffic and transport authorities to work in tandem for implementation of rules to curb accidents.
 The meeting was informed that so far 7, 19,221 vehicles had been registered up to ending December. Of these 1, 26,180 are commercial and 5,93,041 are non-commercial.
