Muslim leaders demand judicial probe in fake encounters

Every second encounter in India is fake: NHRC

SHEIKH AHMED

New Delhi, Apr 7: After disclosure by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) that every second encounter in the country was fake, Muslim leaders have demanded judicial probe to know the facts on these encounters in which hundreds of people were killed.
RTI activist Afroz Alam of Jamia Millia University recently received information from the NHRC that there had been 1224 fake encounters in the country in the past 16 years. The Commission received 2560 cases of police encounters. After examining these cases, it reached to the conclusion that 1224 encounters were fake.
First it was Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, who met Prime Minister to urge him to institute an inquiry into the Batla House and other encounters. He presented a copy of the NHRC report to the Prime Minister to seek justice for the victims of the fake encounters.
The Markazi Jamiat Ahli Hadees Hind also appealed the government to take the report of the NHRC seriously and order probe into the matter.
Maulana Asghar Ali Mehdi Selfi told newsmen today that the matter needed to be probed.
The Muslim leaders said that members of the community were worst victims of fake encounters. There had been scores of such cases in Gujarat, Mahrashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Scores of such cases have come up in Jammu and Kashmir also. The recent arrest of a Commandant of BSF in the killing of teenager at Nishat has also come to light.
President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, Maulana Arshad Madni, also expressed serious concern over the issue, adding that it must not been taken lightly by the government.
