‘Govt setting up Apni Mandis to boost rural economy’

Jammu, Apr 8: To provide better marketing facilities to the vegetable growers at their doorstep, the Department of Agriculture is setting up Apani Mandis under Technology Mission Programme.
This, according to an official statement, was stated by Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir while chairing a review meeting of Technology Mission in the Agriculture sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Minister said that the government is endeavouring to develop Rural Primary Market for progressive farmers to provide better marketing facilities to them.
He said this would encourage the farmers and also motivate the unemployed youth to opt it as a profession besides enhancing productivity, quality of produce and also improve farmers’ income.
Under the programme, the village community have to provide 4 to 5 kanals of land, free of cost, for the establishment of Rural Market (Apani Mandi) for which funds would be provided under the Technology Mission.
The meeting was informed that five such Mandis have been established in the State two in Kashmir division and three in Jammu division. These are Pancher Pulwama and Nonmai, Yaripora, Kulgam in Kashmir division and Dharian Udhampur, Mandi, Poonch and Poni, Reasi in Jammu Division. He directed both the Directors of Agriculture to submit proposals in this regard at the earliest.
