Jammu students protest Kashmir killings

Cops Hunt For Protesters

SYED AMJAD SHAH

Jammu, Aug 10: Police is hunting for the students of Jammu University who staged a demonstration outside the campus here on Tuesday against the killings of youth in Kashmir.
Eyewitnesses said that hundreds of students, mostly belonging to Kishtwar, Doda, Rajouri, Poonch and Kashmir region, assembled outside the University gate and raised anti-government and anti-troops slogans. Carrying placards, the students were demanding the revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act and reduction of troops from the state.
The protesters raised concern over the killing of innocent youth by police and CRPF and sought immediate action against all the guilty personnel.
“It is the high time for the Government of India and Pakistan to seriously come to table with a motive to settle the dispute with the help of United Nations so that people of Kashmir, who have seen bloodshed for last two decades, can live a peaceful life,” one of the protesters said.
“Kashmiri people are not being allowed to speak out against the injustice they are being subjected to,” said another protester. He said that the every human being shall condemn use of such brutal force against the innocent and unarmed civilians.
It was reliably learnt that the protest, especially placards and slogans, sent panic wave among the police and district administration. The police, they said, was now hunting for the students who organised the protest.
Sources said that most of the students, who participated in the protest, have left their rented accommodations and hostels fearing harassment.
In the morning, hundreds of students assembled at Shaheedi Chowk here where civil society had organized a signature campaign against Kashmir killings and tried to stage a protest demonstration.
Eyewitnesses said the attempt was foiled by a strong contingent of police and paramilitary personnel. The students dispersed peacefully and later assembled outside the Jammu University campus.
