Jammu, Aug 16: Hurling of a shoe towards Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, during I-Day parade at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar by a policeman has triggered a debate in the winter capital.
The ruling National Conference played down the incident and termed it as a security lapse. While the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described the incident as “resultant of simmering public anger against Omar Abdullah.”
The incident also remained the talk of town with people, irrespective of their political affiliations, discussing it though having different opinions.
Former Provincial president, Jammu Province National Conference, Ajay Sadhotra said, “The suspended constable hurled a shoe towards Omar out of personal frustration and the issue should not be blown out of proportion.”
“Though the incident was unfortunate, yet it was a clear indication of simmering anger against the Chief Minister. It is basically an outburst against the ruling government which has failed to honour and respect the sentiments of people. He should resign,” senior PDP leader, Daman Bhasin said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), state president, Shamsher Singh Manhas condemned the incident but he was quick to add that Chief Minister had lost the confidence of people and he should quit.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) state chief, Tulsi Dass Langeh remarked, “It shows that people are fed up.”
The BSP leader claimed that the people of Kashmir and senior NC leaders have rejected “dynasty rule” and they want a change.
Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) chairman, Bhim Singh termed the incident as “most unfortunate, disrespectful, hateful and against cultural ethos,” and sought immediate resignation of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
“The civil society, central leadership and Chief Minister himself need to realize that its is high time for him to quit,” he said.
Singh said that he had advised the Chief Minister in the All Party Meeting in Delhi convened by the Prime Minister on August 10, 2010 that he should resign and work for the welfare of the Kashmiris for sometime
