Tere Bin Laden
SILVER SCREEN
`WHAT AN IDEA SIRJI'. THE LEAST YOU CAN SAY ABOUT THIS SMART PIECE OF CINEMA, REVIEWS MUHAMMAD KAMRAN SHAMSHAD
Tere Bin Laden once again reaffirms that a huge star cast or a big budget movie is not important for the success of the movie. Have a good story idea, execute it, get your actors to perform and the results will surprise you. Tere Bin Laden is a political satire. The first Bollywood movie based on Pakistan.
Written and directed by Abhishek Sharma Tere Bin Laden is a story of aspiring journalist Ali Hassan (Ali Zafar, the Pakistan actor) who wants to get inside the land of his dreams—USA. But a freak incident ends up with Ali Haasan getting deported back to Pakistan. After that he tries hard to get his visa approved trying every possible method but he is unable to get through.
Seven years later Ali is working as journalist in a poor and unnoticeable channel Danka Television, owned by crazy Majeed (Piyush Mishra). Ali still dreams of going to his land of dreams and decides to take the help of Lashker- e- Amreeka, an outfit that aims to help people relocate to the U.S by any possible means. One day while being given the assignment to cover a croaking contest of cocks he chances to notice Noora (Pradhuman Singh), an Osama look-alike figure on the editing table. Then he devises a plan irrespective of its consequences which he believes will land him into USA. But to make his plan successful he needs the help of an Arabic script writer, a mimic artist and make up person. How he convinces the Laden look-alike to utter Arabic dialogues is hilarious.
The film then moves towards American response and the dig taken on their intelligence agencies. It doesn’t spare Pakistan either. The plan to capture Laden. The amount of money used to nab his donkey which USA intelligence agency believes he uses as a transport. The `yes boss' attitude of Pakistani establishment and the secret meetings held inside the big tankers leaves the audience in splits. The film is filled with plenty of laughing moments and irresistible scenes.
There are few scenes which get you glued to your seats. Like the one where the Laden look-alike turns the prose dialogue into an Arabic song or where he uses Punjabi expletives, or the bomb scene where his pet cock is martyred. The film has really succeeded in sending a message that one tape of Laden means hefty business deals where everyone gains more than double the amount he pays for its propriety. Unlike many slapstick Bollywood movies Tere Bin Laden does not fall into that category. If watched seriously the film does raise some questions on the functioning of media and intelligence agencies. Not only that, but the nexuses between the two. Acting is lead by Pakistani actor Ali Zafar but its Pradhuman Singh as Laden look alike that gets all the attention. The rest of the actors have done their job commendably well and sometimes you forget that you are watching a Bollywood movie. The couple of songs in the movie composed by Shankar-Ehsan-Loy and Dhruv Dhalla are in sync with film.
The originality of the script is always there. Although a sensitive topic, the satire is well intended and clever. With the film stretching less than two hours duration it is an excellent watch.
