Sopur, Aug 19: A policeman was killed and two others wounded when suspected militants fired upon the house of National Conference MLA in Sopur area of north Kashmir’s Varmul district Wednesday night.
Police sources told Greater Kashmir that three to four heavily armed militants appeared near the house of Muhammad Ashraf Ganai at Dangarpora and asked his guards to lay down arms, but they refused and opened fire, triggering a brief gunfight.
“An SPO was killed and two policemen were wounded in the brief exchange of firing,” they said, adding that this was second attack on Ganai’s house in past two years.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Ashraf Ganai accused the government of failing to provide enough security to him.
“The government has reduced my security. First 12 policemen were on duty now it is just six, government should increase my security forthwith,” he demanded.
He said that he was not present in the house at the time of the attack but his family was there.
