Valley hospitals running short of surgical stuff
Injured Look For Help From Civil Society, NGOs
SAMAAN LATEEF
Srinagar, Aug 22: The victims of police and paramilitary CRPF ‘atrocities’, admitted in the Valley hospitals, are looking for financial help from the civil society and non-governmental organizations, for purchasing medicines and food items.
Even as the SK Institute of Medical Sciences, SMHS and Bone and Joints Hospitals here are providing medicine to patients ‘free of cost’, they are falling short of several drugs and other surgical stuff in the wake of huge inflow of patients.
A SKIMS official said at least 350 injured were admitted to the hospital in the past one month. Hundreds have been admitted to SKIMS and B&J. The hospitals are reportedly running short of surgical items like bandages, cotton, drugs and other related stuff. “There are so many organizations and individuals in Kashmir who can come forward and help the patients, directly or indirectly. This time patients get food from people who prepare it in their localities. But patients need a sustained help so that they can get medicines in time,” the SKIMS official said.
While patients in the hospitals express satisfaction over the care they receive, the doctors find it difficult to manage all the patients. “Patients have to buy many drugs from the market. It is better if the civil society steps in and comes forward with help to the patients,” said a doctor at the SMHS hospital. “They can provide financial help to the needy so that they are able to meet the daily requirement of medicines and food. Attendants of many patients have to stay in rented accommodations in city areas. They too need financial help because many patients happen to be too poor to afford medicines from the market.”
He said the non-governmental organizations must also come forward and help the patients in whatever the way they can.
