No Strike On Fridays, Next Wednesday

ARIF SHAFI WANI

Srinagar, Aug 24: Maintaining that ongoing agitation will continue till the right of self-determination is not given to Kashmiris, the Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Tuesday issued a 10-day protest program.
Accusing the Government of trying to suppress the movement by preparing to hold Panchayat and Municipal elections, Geelani maintained that such tactics will have dangerous consequences.
The calendar includes relaxations on Fridays and next Wednesday besides deal in shutdown from 5 pm to 7 am on coming Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The protest calendar was issued after a marathon meeting of Hurriyat (G) Majlis-e-Shoora chaired by Syed Ali Shah Geelani who is spearheading the ongoing ‘Quit Jammu and Kashmir Movement.’
Among the major decisions, the Majlis-e-Shoora urged the people to boycott the Panchayat elections and continue the ongoing agitation till achievement of right to self-determination.
Geelani accused New Delhi of playing a dangerous game by adopting what he said rigid stand on resolution of Kashmir dispute. “At a time when Kashmiris have taken to roads and youth are being killed with impunity, the Government is beating the trumpet of holding Panchayati elections. Such tactics which are aimed to suppress the movement and aspirations of Kashmiris can have serious repercussions,” he said.
Geelani said elections were held in Kashmir umpteen times. “Like in the past, the elections failed to pave way for resolution of Kashmir neither will they in future help to improve the situation.
Only such elections will be acceptable to Kashmiris which are held under the observation of the United Nations and where their aspirations are taken into consideration,” he said.
The veteran leader urged the people to celebrate the Shab-e-Qadar and Eid-ul-Fitr will austerity in view of the killing of over 60 youth and teenagers in troopers and police action.
“Kashmiris are passing through trepidation. Entire Valley is in a state of mourning. Not a single day passes without killing of youth by troopers and cops. We make a fervent appeal to people to observe Eid with utmost austerity,” he said.
The Majis-e-Shoora asked the bakers not to prepare any bakery items. It asked the butchers to sell less quantity of meat and placed ban of sale of fire-crackers. “In this hour of grief people should cook only one or two vegetables and desist from extravagance.”
Geelani urged people to observe a complete shutdown on Wednesday August 25. “People should stage a sit-in on roads from morning to Asar prayers. They should offer Zuhr and Asar prayers on roads and recite Qanoot-e-Nazila. After Taraweeh prayers a brief protest should be held,” he said.
On Thursday, August 26, Geelani called for a complete shutdown to observe solidarity with Kashmiris languishing in various jails. On Friday, August 27, there will be no strike. He said special prayers for recovery of the injured by troopers and police should be held.
On August 28, Saturday, there will be shutdown. The conglomerate said on this day, the biggest congregation will be held at TRC where Geelani will address the people.

However on these three days, there will be relaxation in the shutdown from 5 pm to 7 am. People have been asked to register their protest on social networking websites and after Taraweeh prayers.
