BOPEE, University passes buck on engineering list
FUTURE OF 5000 STUDENTS AT STAKE
NAZIA AKHTAR
Srinagar, Aug 27: The future of around 5000 students of the valley who appeared in the engineering entrance examination is at stake with the Board of Professional Entrance Examinations refusing to declare their selection list for the reason that the college for which they have applied had not renewed its affiliation with the University.
According to the students, BOPEE declared the results for all the three colleges located at Jammu leaving the one operating in valley.
“The BOPEE declared the selection list of all the three Jammu colleges and those students who had opted SSM College of Engineering & Technology Pattan have been left to suffer,” they said.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, the parents of these students expressed concern about the issue and said it was quite perturbing for their wards.
“My daughter is shattered with what is happening. We are tossed between the college and BOPEE with no outcome. Chairman BOPEE keeps on telling us that college has not submitted some important documents, which the SSM authorities deny. Whatever the reason, it is the career of our wards which is at risk,” said Bashir Ahmad Khan a parent.
Another parent Javaid said, “If the list for all three Jammu colleges has been declared, why the same has been stopped for the valley college?”
Many students said that they approached the concerned Minister, but were disappointed from his cold response.
Chairman BOPEE, Mushtaq Ahmad Peer said, “The College need to renew its University affiliation every year and this year it hasn’t done till now. As soon as we get the papers of renewed affiliation we will declare the list, which is ready with us.”
“Even if the college can get us in writing from the University that their affiliation is under process and the admission should be granted to the students we will release the list. But releasing the list without that can make us answerable to the University,” he added.
Denying this, the college authorities hold BOPEE responsible for causing the unnecessary inconvenience to the students.
SSM Chairperson, Dilafroz Qazi said, “We have given all the papers to BOPEE and there are no formalities left. BOPEE is an examining body which is meant to see the merit of the students and they simply have to give us the merit list. They have nothing to do with other requirements.” “Our college has affiliation till ending September2010 which is yet to come and the University does not revalidate it till it expires. Therefore affiliation is no concern and we are under process to get it revalidated. The BOPEE is simply adding to the agony of the students and it is a great concern,” she added.
