Houseboat gutted in Nigeen lake

4th in 2 months, HOA cries ‘Govt indifference’

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, Nov 30: A houseboat, Royal Pleasure owned by Farooq Ahmed Dar, was gutted at Nigeen lake last night.
The President Houseboat Owners Association(HOA), Manzoor Wangnoo said yet again the fire-fighters couldn’t reach the spot in time as the wooden wonder, a key attraction for tourists, was gutted to cinder.
It was the fourth houseboat to have gutted in the City waterbodies in the past two months taking the losses suffered by the owners to millions of rupees.
Wangnoo said the government had failed to provide adequate fire-fighting arrangements in the twin lakes of Dal, Nigeen, despite repeated appeals.
Another apathy with the houseboat industry, Wangnoo said, was that there was no comprehensive police for rehabilitation of the victims whose houseboats are gutted.
“We badly need a one time policy because the government doesn’t take it as immovable property,” he said.
Meanwhile, the former present HOA, Muhammad Azim Tuman lamented the government for being “callous towards houseboat industry, a backbone of tourism in Kashmir.”
He expressed sympathies with the affected Dar family.
