New broadband policy by fiscal end
Connectivity to improve by 20 times in 4 yrs

Srinagar, Dec 13: Endeavouring to increase internet connectivity in the country, the central government will come out with a new broadband policy by the end of this fiscal.
According to reports the policy proposes measures that would help increase broadband connectivity almost 20 times in next four years.
The Confederation of Indian Industries, this regard, has submitted a report to the union telecom minister suggesting a spending Rs 40,000 crore to get to a target of more than 200 million broadband connections.
According to reports the report has recommended three models for setting up the infrastructure. “Under the first model the government can own the infrastructure, the second model proposes a public private joint venture, while the third model envisages financial incentives by government.”
The CII report suggests Rs. 20,000 crore lying in the USO fund to be utilised.
According to reports the TRAI in its recommendations has suggested Rs. 60,000 crore for setting up a broadband backbone which will be available to all operators setting up the network.
