Srinagar, Dec 13: A speeding swanky car Monday morning crushed to death a young man driving down in the opposite lane when the former jumped over the Airport Road divider and rammed into his car at Parray Pora, witnesses and police said.
The deceased who was driving a brand new Swift was identified as a final engineering student of NIT Srinagar –Aatif Mudabbir Dar son of Senior Superintendent of Police and Passport Officer, Ghulam Ahmed Dar of Humhama.
The accused Jasim Hussain Kawoosa son of Mushtaq Ahmed of Rang Hamam, Nowhatta, a class 12th student, “surrendered before police” and has been detained at Police Station Sadder.
This is the second death by a speeding cab in a week on this fashionable road snaking the south City suburb. Past week a businessman Malik Javaid Ahmed was crushed by a CRPF vehicle.
RECKLESS DRIVING
Witnesses said at around 9 AM, the speeding sedan bearing registration No DL3CAE 0154 zoomed past the Parray Pora road–heading towards Hyderpora.
“Passerby’s were shocked to see the swanky car zooming at a very high pace. But before anyone would react, in typical Bollywood style, we saw it skidding off the lane, jumping over the divider only to hit a car coming from the opposite direction,” said a witness.
Aatif Mudabbir Dar was seriously wounded and stuck in the wreckage of his car till he was removed from there to be rushed to hospital. But the wounded man lost his battle for life.
Though the accused, allegedly a minor, as per witnesses managed to flee from the spot, he later “surrendered before the police.”
Jasim, who was allegedly driving the tinted black car, is son of a government official.
LOCALS PROTEST
Traffic on the busy road remained disrupted for some two hours after the accident while the locals complained of being taken for a ride by the speedsters particularly those “roaming around the coaching centres in the area.”
They said reckless driving by eve-teasers has become a routine in the area, a hub of coaching centres
“This BMW boy had often been roaming around the coaching centres in his tinted swanky car… Today our worst fears came true,” the locals said adding he was involved in many anti-social activities.
“Though following our repeated pleas, the police has started some patrolling in the area, such spoilt kids keep roaming around to trigger nuisance of eve-teasing,” said a local youth and activist, Omar Bhat.
POLICE VERSION
The police has filed a FIR vide No 263 of 2010 under section 273, 337, 427 RPC.
When contacted the SDPO Sadder, Showkat Shah confirmed the eyewitness account that the car was moving at a high pace when it skid off the lane and rammed into the other car.
About the Swift, he said it was a brand new car yet to get a full fledged registration number as it was plying on a temporary number KMR 882.
THE ‘CONFUSION’
The Superintendent of Police south City Muhammad Irshad Khan said the police wasn’t sure whether Jasim was the “true accused or not.”
“We are looking for the second accused who is still at large,” the SP told Greater Kashmir.
