SKIMS performs ‘rare’ surgery

Removes malignant tumor from teenager patient

Srinagar, Dec 15: The medicos at SK Institute of Medical Sciences Soura on Wednesday performed a rare surgery by successfully removing tumor from a 17 year-old girl from Budgam.
 An SKIMS handout said: “The surgeons at the department of Surgical Gastroenterology, performed a complicated pancreatic surgical procedure (Central Pancreatectomy) on Siamia.”
 “She had a low grade malignant tumor of the pancreatic head and neck which normally would need a pancreatico-duodenectomy,” it added.
 “Such rare procedures are undertaken at very few centers in the country. The operation on Siamia, involved the use of intra-operative Ultrasound Doppler for the first time, making the procedure safe and successful,” the handout said.
 Director SKIMS, Dr Abdul Hamid Zargar has  complimented the departments of surgical Gastroenterology and Anesthesiology for the feat.
