Kumar reviews Rs 370 cr national mission for saffron

Srinagar, Dec 16: Director, Union Ministry of Agriculture, Shailendra Kumar today reviewed implementation of the Rs 373.18 crore project under National Mission on Saffron. Kumar visited the Seed Multiplication Farm at Allowpora Pulwama where 5 hectares of land are brought under multiplication of Saffron Corms in the first phase. Kumar was informed that under Corm Saffron Multiplication 82 hectares will be brought under Public Sector Nurseries, which is expected to produce 1230 M tons of quality corms for further use under Saffron Area Expansion in the State.
Kumar, according to PIB handout, directed the officers of the State Agriculture Department to put their efforts and utilize modern technology in boosting the production and enhance the quality of Saffron. Kumar also visited the site proposed for establishment of Spice Park at Pampore which is aimed at developing organized marketing by way of quality based pricing of Saffron and eliminating touts’ role while encouraging direct transactions between growers, traders, exporters and industrial agencies. Kumar also interacted with saffron growers of Pampora and advised them to coordinate with Agriculture Department.
