For AIDS control, GMC agrees with AB but not C

‘JK has impressive record because of social-moral values’

GK CITY CORRESPONDENT

Srinagar, Dec 1: On World AIDS day it were the students of Government Medical College in this City in the Himalayas lashing the West for its concepts on prevention of the deadly disease, which kills five patients every minute.
They said through words like “safe sex” and “sex workers”, the West was trying to give “promiscuity a legal shape”.
“Rather than the use of condoms, let they be taught to remain loyal,” said a GMC student during a debate on AIDS at the college.
“Prostitution and promiscuity is being legalized as sex workers,” said another student during the event organized by Department of Community Medicine( also known as SPM).
Referring to the lesser number of AIDS cases in JK as compared to elsewhere, a student Khurram Maqbool hailed that the state had an “impressive record.”
“Of the cases reported from the state most have been of non-local labour or soldiers,” she added.
Talking to Greater Kashmir during sidelines of the event, its Coordinator Dr Muhammad Salim Khan said the West was propagating AIDS awareness through ABC of advise control where A is Abstinence, Be is Being faithful and C stands for Condom.
“AIDS is a behavioural disease. Unless mindset is changed you can’t prevent it by safe sex methods every time. So we don’t buy such westernized concepts when we have socio-religious guideline to abide,” Dr Salim said.
The event was thrown open by the SPM head Dr Muneer Masoodi while the GMC Principal Dr Shahida Mir was also present on the occasion.
Asma Tak, Maidah Hameed and Insha, the GMC students bagged first second and third positions respectively in the seminar.
A Logo and Poster Competition was held in which Hafza Zahoor and Henna bagged first and second positions. The posters symbolically cautioned on AIDS and its prevention.
