Srinagar, Dec 24: At least five persons, including paramilitary CRPF personnel, were injured in a grenade explosion in north Kashmir’s Sopore town on Friday, police said.
Giving details of the incident Superintendent of Police Sopore Altaf Ahmed Khan told Greater Kashmir that suspected militants lobbed the grenade on the CRPF bunker near bus stand on Newport-Sopore road this morning. “The device missed the target and fell on the road injuring five persons, including a CRPF man,” he said.
He identified injured as Muhammad Ayub Shalla son of Abdul Gaffar of Model town, Bilal Ahmad Langoo son of Muhammad Amin of Noorbagh, Muhammad Ashraf Bhat son of Abdul Samad of Saripora Rafiabad and Ghulam Mohiuddin Shiekh of Shallapora and constable Anil Kumar of 179 battalion CRPF.
He said that three of the injured were shifted to Srinagar for treatment and condition of Muhammad Ashraf, who received splinter injuries in head was stated to be critical.
Locals said that explosion created panic in the market, with shopkeepers closing their shops and pedestrians scurrying for cover.
“We don’t know where from the grenade was lobbed,” said a local.
The normalcy however returned in the area after an hour. Following the attack, police carried out searches in the area.
Pertinently, Sopore and adjoining areas have witnessed increase in the militancy related incidents since early this month. In the first three months of 2010 town witnessed more than 20 militancy related incidents in which more than 10 persons were killed and scores injured.
