PROTESTS AT SAMBOORA

Day 2: Shutdown in Shopian

Srinagar, Dec 2: A complete shutdown was observed for the second consecutive day Thursday in Shopian town of South Kashmir against the continued detention of youth.
Reports said for the second consecutive day the South Kashmir township of Shopian remained shut against the arrests of dozens of youth by police on the charges of stone pelting on troops and police.
All shops, offices, educational institutes, financial institutions remained shut against the arrest spree by the forces. The transport was also off the roads due to the shutdown.
“Dozens of youth have been arrested and booked on false charges. It seems that government wants the entire younger generation to rot in jails,” Ghulam Qadir, a Bongam resident said.
He added that the nocturnal raids by police and troopers were continuing unabated forcing many youth to abandon their houses and to take shelter with friends and relatives.
Meanwhile, the arrest of civilian triggered protests in Samboora Pulwama on Thursday.
Eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir that hundreds of people took to streets at Samboora on Srinagar-Pulwama road this afternoon to protest against the arrest of Mohiuddin Dar alias Badshah Khan.
Demanding his release, the protesters blocked highway for hours thus disrupting the traffic movement on the stretch.
The protesters alleged that paramilitary CRPF men detained him without any provocation in Pulwama town where he had gone for work.
When contacted, Superintendent of police Pulwama Abdur Razaq said Badshah was a “chronic stone pelter”. “He was wanted in many cases. So was arrested,” he said.
