MULBERRY TREES CHOPPED DOWN NEAR CRPF BUNKER
Locals accuses paramilitary of cutting for heating arrangements
GK CITY REPORTER
Srinagar, Dec 29: In broad daylight prized mulberry trees dotting the Jawahir Nagar bund were Wednesday chopped down near a CRPF bunker there.
Witnesses and locals said the CRPF troopers posted in the area cut the trees, which had been there for decades since the time when the Maharajas got the canal constructed.
The felling of trees was so brazen on the road that the vehicular traffic movement got affected for around half an hour.
Many a passer-by said they caught the action live in their mobile cameras.
The fallen trees were finally dumped outside the CRPF bunker, a concrete building constructed on the picturesque road.
The locals alleged that the cutting of mulberry tree branches by CRPF has been a routine there.
“They used it as firewood for heating,” the locals said while pointing towards a heap of branches near the bunker.
When contacted the CRPF PRO Prabakhar Tripathi said he had no information about the incident.
“I will have to ask the concerned battalion about the incident,” Tripathi told Greater Kashmir.
Pertinently the chopping of mulberry trees is a criminal offence and police has to file an FIR in any such incident.
