Welcome move
The state government's decision to have the winter schooling for students from 9th standard to 12th standard is a good move. If made successful, it will open a new chapter in the educational history of our valley. There was a knee-jerk reaction to this bold decision of government. The coaching centre operators termed this decision as 'Punishment' for students. Paying no heed to their criticism, the government decided to keep schools open for winter season. Why should we consider winter schooling a 'forbidden fruit' for the students of Kashmir province? Europe and America, most advanced nations of the globe experience harsh winter season. But they do not close educational institutions. Bone-chilling cold during winter should not force one to hibernate for almost three months and enjoy the luxury of idleness. Drastic climatic changes is the result of Global Warning which has engulfed the whole globe. In Kashmir there has been a decline in snowfall for the last few years. So there is no need to make hue and cry over winter schooling. No sooner winter vacations are announced, coaching centres crop up in every nook and corner of our valley. Do these centres have proper heating arrangement? Do they have adequate infrastructure? These centres have become money-minting mills where the parents are fleeced without any feeling of compunction. In order to make winter schooling programme successful, government should arrange heating system and improve the basic infrastructure in the educational institutions. The teachers have to give their hundred per cent to make winter schooling a successful venture. Lets make it a joyful experience.
