Dying Dal
The Dal lake in Srinagar has been described as the “golden jewel” of Kashmir. It lies beneath the beautiful Himalayan peaks and is viewed as a global tourist destination. Besides, the Lake is a major source of water for the Srinagar city and its adjoining areas. However, the lake is in a shambles today. It has been polluted to a great extent. Encroachments, weeds and polythene have choked it from all possible sides. As per the environmentalists, the lake has shrunk from 25 sq km to 11 sq km in the past two decades. It is shameful that the Jammu and Kashmir government has not be able to restore the glory of the Lake even as it claimed, from time to time, that it has a number of projects at hand. Millions of rupees are spent on Dal preservation but only a fraction of the amount is used for the real cause. To curb further eutropication of Dal Lake, the Government needs to have a strong rehabilitation and resettlement plan for the dwellers in hand.
