‘India needs $500 bn investment in infrastructure projects’
SHEIKH AHMED
Inaugurating the 42nd Consultative Committee Meeting (CCM) of the Colombo Plan, the minister said that "such huge funds cannot be mobilised without effective public-private partnership, which can bring in private sector capital, expertise and efficiency in operation and maintenance of the infrastructure.”
Mukherjee said that for the public-private initiative to succeed, it is necessary to remove prevailing constraints in the form of policy and regulatory gaps, inadequate availability of long term finance, management capacity and inadequate shelf of bankable infrastructure projects.
He said the government taking all possible steps to create an atmosphere congenial for fostering public private partnership. “However, much more needs to be done,” he said, adding that there were more than 450 public-private projects worth 47 billion dollars being implemented in the country.
