KU To Celebrate ‘International Youth Year’ In Big Way: Prof Fayaz

Srinagar, Feb 16: The annual Inter-College ski championship organised by Directorate of Physical Education and Sports, University of Kashmir concluded in Gulmarg on Tuesday.
In the event, 26 students representing Handwara, Islamia, Amar Singh, Gandhi, Shopian, Bemina, Varmul, Tral, Sopur, Sri Pratap and Ganderbal degree colleges and different postgraduate departments of the University participated.
Basharat Ahmad Mir of Amar Singh College completed the race in 30.44 seconds and bagged first position. Irfan Ashraf of Varmul College completed the race in 31 and bagged second position while third position went to Muhammad Saleem Bhat of AS College who completed the race in 31.02 seconds.
The championship was conducted under the overall supervision of the University ski coach, Muhammad Yousuf.
Earlier the University organized a 15-day ski camp for 25 students of various colleges of the valley. The students were trained in basic, intermediate and advance level courses. This course was dedicated to the celebration of “International Year for Youth-2010”. The participants were imparted training not only on Poma Ski Lifts of Tourism Department but were also trained on more difficult and high gradient slopes of Mount. Apharwat at Kondori. The participants skied down the treacherous ski runs fearlessly. The University had to suspend the camp for a few days due to snowstorm and avalanche occurred at Gulmarg last week.
The University Registrar, Prof S Fayaz, and Director Sports, Prof N A Rather, also visited the camp and encouraged the budding skiers. Prof Fayaz assured the students that all possible assistance would be provided to the Directorate of Physical Education for making its endeavour a success. He assured that the University would celebrate the International Youth Year 2010 in a big way.
He informed that a joint celebration committee representing, DSW, NSS, NCC and Physical Education Departments would be formed soon who will chalk out different youth related programs, which would highlight the problems confronted by the youth.
Prof. Nisar said that all sports activities would coincide with the celebration of IYY-2010. The youth will be aware about the consequences of degradation of environment, health problems and development of social values. The University will be holding two more ski courses for female students and for the students pursuing higher education through Directorate of Distance Education.
