Srinagar, Feb 18: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry expressed concern over “misuse” of Kashmir brand.
At a meeting with leading Valley-based handicraft manufacturers and exporters, the participants noted with dismay that certain elements were selling machine-made shawls under the label of “Kashmir”, thereby earning a bad name to entire handicraft industry of Kashmir.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of KCCI senior vice president Abdul Hamid Punjabi and among others was attended by the Director, Craft Development Institute (CDI) and representative of the Directorate of Handicrafts.
Director CDI gave a power-point presentation on the “project of branding of Kashmiri products and about the setting up of a testing laboratory.”
He highlighted the importance of such branding and the urgent requirement of the testing laboratory. He said the government had already provided funds for the purpose.
The Director CDI informed the meeting that the work on the laboratory was scheduled to start next month
Emphasis was laid on the need to improve the quality of “our products so as to make them competitive at both the domestic as well as the international markets.”
