Museums should be learning centre for youngsters: Omar

Jammu, Feb 19: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today said the museums should not only narrate the history, culture, heritage and other aspects of the area, but should be the learning centre for young generation.
 Speaking at a meeting organized by the State Directorate of Archaeology here in which presentation of concept plan for display, layout and interior of New Museum at Lal Mandi, Srinagar was made by the three different organizations, he said artifacts were important memorabilia of culture, heritage, history, ethos and civilization of a particular area. “J&K possesses a wonderful treasure of such artifacts”, he said.
 He said museums should present a holistic picture of all aspects of the archaeological excellence, historic background, cultural phenomena and heritage identity in a sophisticated and artistic fashion.
 He stressed for making the new Museum at Lal Mandi, an important visiting attraction for students, researchers, tourists and locals. He said the huge quantity of precious artifacts of the SPS Museum should be showcased in the new museum building in such a way, as would reflect their importance and historical background in a befitting manner.
 Giving details of the artifacts of Lal Mandi Museum, Mr. Qadri said that the Museum established by Maharaja Pratap Singh in 1898 possesses 85000 artifacts depicting culture and heritage of J&K covering various subjects of Archaeology, Numismatics, Manuscripts, Decorative Arts, Textiles, Arms and Armory, Paintings, Geology and Mining, Anthropology and Natural History.
 He said the new museum building with 97000 sq feet build up area, has been constructed at a cost of Rs 30.74 crores. The building has been designed as dump proof and fire resistant modern museum with minimum security risks, specious exhibition galleries, smooth visitor’s moments and other necessary requirements.
 The three firms M/S. A B Design and Habitate and Co. New Delhi, Matrica Design Collaborative, Mumbai and U. C. Jain Architecture and Environment, Mumbai gave detail power point presentation of their modules separately.
