SMC to celebrate coalition anniversary

On Jan 5, Pantha Chowk to be Mehjoor Chowk; Khanyar to get community hall, civic body new office entrance

Srinagar, Dec 31: Call it a New Year gift, or anniversary celebrations of the coalition government, but the Srinagar Municipal Corporation is all set for some major functions on January 5, 2010 when Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah will complete a year in the office.
As a much awaited key attraction, the Pantha Chowk is scheduled to be renamed after famed poet Mehjoor with the unveiling of the picturesque tower at the suburb square, constructed in his memory. Besides, first phase of an under construction Community Hall at Khanyar in Shahr-e-Khaas would be thrown open for public use. As about the SMC, the civic body would commission its new entrance –the Khaaksaar Gate on the eastern side of its headquarters.
An official handout said the City Mayor, Salman Ali Sagar along with a team of senior officials including Commissioner, Tufail Ahmed Matoo reviewed work on these projects during a daylong tour.
“The government will inaugurate the Mehjoor Chowk and the first phase of the Community Hall at Khalifapora Khanyar,” the Mayor confirmed while interacting with reporters during the tour.
Sagar said work on other projects including construction of community hall at Onta Bhawan was going on smoothly and would be completed soon.
“We will commission other public facilities as soon as they are completed,” he added.
Sagar, however, remained tight lipped on who would make the January 5 inaugurations.
