KU introduces Masters in Geo-informatics

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, Jan 15:  In a significant development, the Kashmir University has introduced Masters Program in Remote Sensing and GIS at the Department of Geology and Geophysics from this academic session, the KU PRO Friday said.
Expressing happiness over the introduction of the new course, the KU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Riyaz Punjabi said: “The goal is to enhance the understanding and subsequent use of Remote Sensing and GIS for socio-economic environmental friendly development of the state.”
The KU PRO, Showkat Shafi said the university had constituted a high level Advisory Committee, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and coordinated by Dr Shakil A Romshoo, Course Coordinator, for smooth functioning of the course.
Pertinently, the KU was the first university in north India to offer PG Diploma in Remote Sensing and GIS in 2004.
“The department has developed high class infrastructure, both in men and machinery, for offering the best possible education, research and applications experience to its participants from varied background,” Shafi said.
In a short duration of five years, the university has won national and international fame and recognition in the field of Remote Sensing and GIS.
The Geo-informatics course is job oriented and up till now, as per the KU PRO, all the pass-outs of the last five batches (100%) have been adjusted in government, academic and the private sectors. However, the demand for the Remote Sensing and GIS trained persons is much higher than the availability of trained manpower, he added.
