HRD ministry, UGC okays Ganderbal, Samba sites for CUs

Jammu, Jan 22: The Union Human Resource Development Ministry and University Grants Commission have finalized the sites for the construction of two Central Universities in Jammu and Kashmir.
 The University campus would come up at Samba in Jammu and at Ganderbal in Kashmir.
 Highly placed sources told Greater Kashmir that the Minister for Higher Education Minister Abdul Gani Malik met HRD minister Kapil Sibal at New Delhi on Thursday evening and discussed in detail about the setting up of the two university campus in the state.
 The meeting, sources said, deliberated upon the proposed sites for the construction of the campuses and it was decided that the final decision will be announced soon.
 “The minister was told that the HRD ministry and UGC have finalised the two sites for construction of the two campuses after going through the proposal and details submitted by the state education department”, sources added.
 Sources said it has been decided that the campuses will be set up at Samba in Jammu and Ganderbal in Kashmir.
 Earlier, the state government had proposed three sites for Jammu and equal number of them in Kashmir.
 A high level team of HRD Ministry and UGC is scheduled to visit the state on January 28 and 29.
 The committee, sources said, would now complete other requirements for the setting up of the universities.
 Sources said Malik also urged upon the union HRD minister to expedite the process for the appointment of V-C for Central University Jammu.
 Former V-C Kashmir University Abdul Wahid has been appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of Central University Kashmir while a search committee for preparing a panel of five probables for appointment of V-C Central University Jammu has been constituted by the union HRD ministry, which is also expected to submit its report to the President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil.
