AMU Teachers Assn to propose Azad as Chancellor
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Aligarh, Jan 28: The Aligarh Muslim University Staff (Teachers) Association has decided to propose the name of Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad of the post of Chancellor for the University.
This was stated here today by the Seretary of the AMU Staff Association Jamshed Siddiqui at a function of the Association in honour of Azad.
Siddiqui said Azad could play a key role to help the institution to achieve greater heights in the field of higher education.
The Association’s stand came ahead of the annual general meeting of the AMU court, the university’s highest governing body, here on Sunday.
Under the AMU constitution, the AMU court elects by a simple majority the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and Honorary Treasurer.
The decision of the teachers body to propose the name of Azad is understood to have the support of the dissident group in the AMU court.
Senior University officials had earlier claimed that former Chief Justice of India A M Ahmadi, who is also the incumbent Chancellor, would be unanimously elected as the university’s Chancellor.
Azad’s sudden visit to the AMU has, however, given a new twist to the race for the top post.
